Ukrainian Canadian Archives & Museum of Alberta (UCAMA)
Location
UCAMA’s collection is comprised of three main areas: a library, the archives and the ethnographic collection. All contain rare and valuable material of significance to the history of Ukraine and Ukrainian Canadian culture.
The library is one of the major repositories for Ukrainian Canadian printed materials in Canada. Its collection has grown substantially to encompass over 40,000 volumes. It also contains rare Ukrainian magazines, newspapers and almanacs from various countries across the world together with Albertan titles that represent a significant contribution to early publishing in our province.
UCAMA is the only archival institution in Alberta that specifically collects Ukrainian Canadian archival records. This collection is extensive and contains 40 linear metres of textual materials, more than 5,000 photographs, approximately 300 maps, and a large number of records and posters. Many of these items are rare, one-of-a-kind pieces.
The ethnographic collection contains a number of rare and significant pieces as well as a range of items that represent cultural development of Ukrainians in Canada. The collection contains approximately 2,000 artefacts including clothing, textiles, ecclesiastical items, household items and ceramics, musical instruments and military items. In addition, UCAMA houses an extensive art collection of some 400 works.
